Week 2 of the Garden Harvest Quilt Along is all about cutting fabric and planning out blocks.
Cutting Fabric
Using Pre-cuts:
If using pre-cuts – this step is super easy! You already have your 10” squares and 5” squares ready to go.
Cut all 5” D squares as instructed in the pattern. Keep the pieces together as a set.
You will need to cut enough Fabric A sets for the number of blocks you are making. Each Fabric A set should be of the same fabric, but you can use a different fabric for each block. Cut the sizes indicated in the pattern.
Cut (1) Fabric A set for each block: Baby (20), Lap (30), Throw (48)
⅓ yard cuts of fabric
If you purchased a kit using ⅓ yard cuts, use the following to get the required number of 10” squares, 5” squares and A squares/rectangles.
For EACH 1/3 yard cut of fabric, cut the following:
- (2) 10″ squares (B & C)
- (2) 5″ squares (D)
- (2) 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles (A)
- (12) 2 1/2″ squares (A)
Cutting Diagram for ⅓ yard of fabric:
Planning your blocks
For EACH block you will need:
- (1) Fabric B/C pair of 10” squares **
- (1) Fabric D 5” square (cut as directed in the pattern and kept as a set)
- (1) Fabric A set (cut as directed in the pattern)
**The same B/C pair of 10” squares will be used for TWO blocks. (You can decide which fabric you want in the outer corner.)
TIP: Once you have your blocks planned, keep them organized by using clips or pins. I clipped the A & D pieces for both blocks that use the same HST pair to the 10” squares.
CAUTION: IT’S EASY TO GET CONFUSED – If you want your center, Fabric A fabrics, to match on each block, I suggest making one block at a time, and marking your cut fabrics.
