Tish from Iconic Quilts shares her tutorial on making a quilt tool pouch, an easy and scrap friendly project, on the Quilters Candy blog.
Hello fellow sewists, I am Tish from Iconic Quilts. Devotee of quilting and designing patterns, Nanna to two beautiful granddaughters and currently living in Devon, UK by the sea a great source of inspiration.
I have designed this Quilt Tool Pouch which is not only useful but uses up some of those scraps we all have lying around – though you will need to make a few to make a dent in them if you are anything like me.
Fabric Requirements
Scraps – minimum size 3.5” x 3.5”
Scrap batting – pieces can be joined together
If you have scraps from Jelly Rolls these work great for the binding and pocket bindings, if not just cut some 2.5” strips
Step One
Cut 36 3.5” x 3.5” squares from various materials
Sew into pairs and then in rows of 4 – press seams alternatively on the rows so you can nest when joining
Set one row aside – measures 3.5” x 12.5” (Piece A)
Sew two rows together – nesting seams to make a block 6.5” x 12.5” (Piece B)
Sew three rows together twice to make two blocks measuring 9.5” x 12.5” (Piece C)
Set to one side
Step Two
Backing Fabric
From scraps of fabric join pieces or if you have large scraps cut to size.
You will need
1 piece 6.5 x 12.5
3 pieces 9.5 x 12.5
Step Three
Cut batting so you have the following
1 piece 6.5” x 12.5”
1 piece 9.5” x 12.5”
1 piece 18.5” x 12.5”
Step Four
Take 1 piece C and join to 1 piece 9.5 x 12.5 and then repeat.
Take Piece A from Step One and join to 1 piece of 6.5” x 12.5” (Piece E)
Final block will measure 9.5” x 12.5”
Step Five
Layer up the pieces as follows
Piece B, one batting 6.5” x 12.5” and backing fabric 6.5” x 12.5”
Piece E, batting 9.5” x 12.5”and backing fabric 9.5” x 12.5”
(1) Piece D, batting 18.5” x 12.5” and (1) Piece D
Backing, batting and front and quilt as desired
Trim
Step Six
Make your binding
You will need two strips 2.5” x 12.5 to bind the pockets and one piece 2.5” x 70”
I joined a number of odd jelly roll strips for this
Fold each piece in half and press
Bind the two pockets at the top
Lay the short binding on the top and sew along edge.
Fold binding over and either hand stitch down or stitch on machine.
Step Seven
Attach the Velcro
Cut a small piece of Velcro and layer up all the pieces as in Step Eight and position one piece of Velcro on the top pocket in the middle of the squares as shown in photo.
Sew round to attach
Fold over the top and place a pin through to mark where the Velcro should go and then sew on opposite side to pin so that when top is folded over the Velcro joins.
Step Eight
Sew pockets
Lay the 9.5” x 12.5” on top of the 18.5” x 12.5”
Lay the 6.5” x 12.5” piece on top of the 9.5” x 12.5” piece and sew up from the bottom using the lines on the patches, to make two pockets, turn and the top and stitch down again.
DO NOT SEW THE MIDDLE LINE AT THIS STAGE
Sew round using an 1/8” seam to hold all three pieces together
Step Nine
Lay the 9.5” x 12.5” (which now has the 6.5” x 12.5” attached) on top of the 18.5” x 12.5”
Sew round using an 1/8” seam to hold all three pieces together
Then sew up from the bottom up the middle of the patches all the way to top of 9.5” x 12.5” to create two pockets on the back and add two pockets to the front pockets
To Finish
Bind around the outside, finish binding using your own method
