One of the easiest ways to maximize your time in the sewing room is to choose quick, easy makes. The Just Desserts quilt is just that! It is possible to get the quilt top cut and sewn in about 4 hours (less for the more experienced quilters). It’s also a great way to use up 10” layer cake square leftovers. Although, I would totally support you going out to buy a new one for the occasion!
Recently, I participated in a Fat Quarter Shop quilt along – Christmastime. I used the fabulous Holly Jolly by Urban Chix for Moda Fabrics. At the end of completing the quilt top, I was left with over 20 layer cake (10” square) pieces. When you have such pretty fabric, you just have to make something with it, right?
I could have simply sewn the squares together in a random fashion, but that seemed too easy. So I decided to cut and reshuffle them instead. It added a new dimension and scrappiness to the blocks.
Here’s a few tips before you get started:
If you have a tough time with creating randomness in your quilts, here’s a tip… Put the pieces into separate containers or baskets, close your eyes and just pick one! The only time I would recommend repicking is if the color is the same or similar. Otherwise, just go with the one you pull out. Easy peasy!
When working with precuts, you often get lots of excess (what I call) fabric dust, which can make a mess! If you toss your precuts into the dryer for 10-15 minutes before you do anything else with them, most of it comes off and collects in the lint catcher instead of all over your sewing space.
