Week 2 - Front Porch Quilt Along

✂️ WEEK 2: Cutting Fabric for Your Front Porch Quilt

Welcome to Week 2 of the Front Porch Quilt Along!

This week, we’re diving into cutting our fabric pieces — an exciting step that brings your quilt one step closer to life.

If you haven’t already, take a peek at the hashtags #FrontPorch2025 and #FrontPorch25 on Instagram. You’ll find tons of beautiful fabric pulls and progress photos from fellow quilters. It’s such an inspiring and creative space — you might even get a few new ideas for your own quilt!

📏 This Week’s Focus: Cutting Your Fabric

Let’s get those rotary cutters ready — it’s time to cut your fabric! ✂️
This step is straightforward and clearly outlined in your pattern. Follow the cutting instructions carefully, and take your time to ensure accuracy. A well-cut quilt is the foundation of a beautifully pieced top!

Helpful tips before you start:

  • Double-check your fabric selection and layout before making your first cut.

  • Use a sharp rotary blade and a reliable ruler for clean, precise cuts.

  • Keep your pattern handy to mark off pieces as you go — it’ll help you stay organized.

🛑 A quick but important reminder:
Please don’t share specific cutting measurements online or on social media — including in photos, captions, or comments. These measurements are part of the copyrighted pattern and are intended only for those who have purchased it. Thank you so much for respecting the time, effort, and creativity that went into designing this quilt!

🎨 A Note About Contrast

As you cut your fabric, take a moment to check the contrast between your center triangle fabrics and your background (low-volume) squares.

Why contrast matters:

If the colors or patterns are too similar, your 3D Flying Geese will blend into the background—and that beautiful dimensional effect will get lost.

Pro tip:
If your center triangle is bold, bright, or busy, pair it with a soft, subtle background. A true low-volume fabric will let your design shine and help those geese pop just like they’re meant to.

👀 Visual Example Below:

LOW CONTRAST

In this mockup, the triangle and background fabrics are too similar. The geese get lost and the design feels muddled.

High Contrast

Here, just by changing the background fabric to something with more contrast, the geese suddenly pop—and the block comes to life!

ORGANIZING YOUR FABRICS

Once I’ve finished cutting my fabrics, I like to lay out the colorful pieces in the order they’ll appear in my quilt top.

This step helps me:

  • Make sure I like how the colors flow together

  • Adjust or recut fabrics if one color feels too strong (or too subtle)

  • Get a clear visual of the final layout before I start sewing

It’s a simple extra step, but it makes a big difference in how happy I am with the finished quilt!

Neatly arranged quilt blocks laid out on a light patterned rug, showcasing a warm color palette of pinks, purples, golds, and oranges. The fabrics are organized in columns, helping visualize the final layout for the Front Porch Quilt.
