Front Porch QAL Week 2

CUTTING FABRIC FOR FRONT PORCH QUILT

Welcome to Week 2 of the Front Porch Quilt Along!

If you haven’t already, be sure to check out the hashtag #FrontPorchQAL to see the beautiful fabric pulls and progress of other quilters.

This week we will be cutting our fabric for our Front Porch Quilts.

PLEASE DON'T POST FABRIC SIZES

As you cut your fabrics, I ask that you do not post or share the finished sizes of your cut squares and rectangles.  That is copyrighted information that can be found only in the pattern.

Tips for cutting fabric

Cutting the fabric is straight forward, as outlined in the pattern.

One thing to notice as you cut your fabrics is how the background fabrics (low volume / squares) look with your colored fabrics.

To get the best end result, I recommend a high contrast with your two fabrics.

If you have loud, busy fabrics in the center of your flying geese, try to keep the background fabric very low volume.

If the two fabrics are similar, it’s hard for the eye to see where the middle triangle piece is on your finished quilt.

FOR EXAMPLE

NO CONTRAST – I mocked up two examples to show you what I mean.

Note in this first example how the fabrics used for both the triangles and the background are similar?  There’s no contrast, and it’s hard for the eye to see the flying geese blocks.

Notice how to fabrics compete to be seen?

HIGH CONTRAST  – Now compare with the same center fabric, just swapping out the background fabric for something with contrast.

Front Porch Quilt mockup

This is the mockup of my original Front Porch Quilt. Notice the contrast of the bright colored center fabrics compared to the low volume backgrounds.

CUTTING YOUR FABRIC

As you cut your fabric this week, notice how the contrast is with your center fabric compared to your background fabrics.

Make sure there is a contrast.  Have the squares / background fabrics be a tru low volume so that your 3D flying geese really stand out.
