Front Porch QAL – Week 5

Front Porch QAL week 7

Front Porch Quilt Along - Week 5

This week we will be QUILTING our Front Porch Quilts.

Figuring out how to quilt a 3D Flying Geese quilt top can be a bit tricky, so I want to share photos of my original quilt top.

Jill of J Coterie quilted this and did an amazing job.  We decided to quilt down the flying geese by having her quilt around the triangle border of each block.  Then she did free motion quilting on the background fabric.

Other Quilting Ideas

A couple of other ideas for your Front Porch Quilt:

  • Stitch in the ditch.  Quilt along the seams of each block to allow the 3D Flying Geese blocks to pop and not be sewn down.
  • Free motion quilt just on the background fabric, not quilting or sewing down the triangle blocks.
  • Hand quilt (which I will be doing) on the background area.

If you want to join me in hand quilting your quilt top, I will be hosting a Hand Quilting Challenge for the Quilters Candy Members this month!  CLICK HERE to join us.

Hand Quilting Design

If you wonder how I plan to hand quilt my Front Porch quilt, I created a little image to show you where I plan to hand quilt.  To see a video tutorial on how to hand quilt, check out my video tutorial HERE

WHAT BATTING TO USE

As with any quilt, you can use whatever batting you prefer.  I usually use wool batting or puff batting.  Since I already added fill to me Front Porch quilt by filling my 3D Flying Geese blocks, I will use wool batting.  I’ll let the puff be in the quilt top.
