Front Porch Quilt Along – Week 5 - It’s Time to Quilt!
Can you believe it? We’re on Week 5 of the Front Porch Quilt Along—and this week, it’s all about quilting your beautiful quilt tops!

Quilting 3D Flying Geese
Quilting a top with 3D Flying Geese is a little different, so I wanted to give you a peek at how I approached mine.
✨ Jill of J Coterie quilted my cover quilt, and she did an incredible job! We chose to quilt around the triangle edges of each 3D block, letting them pop off the quilt. Then she added free-motion quilting in the background fabric to give it texture and flow.
📸 See the photo above of the Front Porch quilt for reference.
Other Quilting Ideas
If you’re looking for inspiration, here are a few options that work great with 3D elements:
Free motion quilting (background only): Let those triangles float freely while adding movement to the rest of the quilt.
- Remi Vale Studio recently made these 3D flying geese blocks and used her long arm machine to quilt it. She did go slowly to amke sure the flying geese didn’t get turned up, but look how lovely it turned out! You can visit her blog and read more about it HERE.
Hand quilting: Take a look at my idea below!
- Just imagine using a Sashiko Machine to make this kind of hand-quilting look so much faster! Maybe you’ll win the grand prize and make it happen!
- Stitch in the ditch: Quilt along the seams only—this keeps your triangle flaps loose and dimensional.
HAND QUILTING HELP
If you’re curious about how I’m quilting my Front Porch quilt, I created a little graphic to show exactly where I’ll be stitching. You can also watch my video tutorial for step-by-step help with hand quilting.
LET'S TALK BATTING
You can use any batting you like, but here’s what I recommend:
Wool batting – adds warmth and a soft loft, without making your quilt too puffy.
Puff/poly batting – great if you didn’t add fill to your 3D triangles and want extra dimension.
Since I added Perfect Loft fill to my triangle blocks already, I’m using wool batting for this one—just enough puff, without overdoing it.
