Front Porch Quilt Along Week 3

This week, we’re diving into sewing the 3D Flying Geese blocks—and I think you’re going to love the depth and texture they add to your quilt. It’s such a fun technique that brings your design to life!

Tips for Assembling Your 3D Flying Geese Blocks

Want crisp, clean blocks? Here are a few tips to help you get the best results:

  • Pin with care: Take your time to align the fabrics before sewing. Accurate pinning = accurate blocks.

  • Trim precisely: Be sure to leave exactly ¼” from the tip of your triangle to the top edge of the rectangle.

  • Center the triangle: When placed correctly, the triangle should touch both corners of your rectangle.

📸 See the example photos below or refer to your pattern instructions for visuals!

💡 Are you a visual learner?
I’ve created a short video that walks you through my process for sewing, pressing, and assembling the blocks—step by step.

Sometimes seeing it in action makes all the difference! 🎥

Note: I originally recorded this video in portrait mode, but it’s displaying in landscape. I apologize that the framing isn’t always centered — thanks for your understanding!

Want to Add Fill to Your 3D Flying Geese Blocks?

This step is totally optional—but so fun if you want to add a little extra puff and dimension to your blocks!

🧵 Shoutout to @thewannabegrandma who first pointed out to me that this was possible. When asked if this was possible, I originally said no… but she was right—it totally works!

How I’ve Added Filling:

  • I used Pellon Perfect Loft, a super soft polyester fill I picked up at JoAnn.

  • After trimming my blocks (as shown in the pattern), I tucked a small amount of fill inside the triangle.

  • I pinned the triangle closed before sewing the next Flying Geese block on top (right sides together).

  • There’s no perfect measurement—I just eyeball it and try to keep it consistent from block to block.
